- I never want him to be fearful of me or my wife and I have found that over the years, reward and positivity garner respect and I know he respects me as I do him.
Think Like A Dog
You see, having a dog is like having no other pet. They quickly become part of your family, your pack and they love that as they are essentially very warm and social creatures.
You will see that a dog really enjoys walking with you and your family as it makes them feel like they are part of your world, the world you have invited them into.
It is essential that you remember that and if you do and you do start to think a bit like a dog, then you will have a much better understanding of them, and training of any kind will be more fun and effective.
The most important lesson or instruction I can give you is to NEVER give up on your dog.
I have rehomed 4 Greyhounds in the last 20 years and some of them have been easier to train than others, but on average allow yourself and the dog around 3 months to settle in with you and you both get to know how each other works!
It really can take that long, but in reality, it can be much shorter depending on how much effort YOU put in.
A dog is a living, breathing, and thinking animal and you simply owe it to them to be kind and patient and the results you get from this will be truly astounding.
Too many give up way too early with their new dog and that is why we see shelters all over the world full of loveable unwanted dogs.
I think Cesar Milan quoted the phrase that he doesn’t help people with dog problems, he helps dogs with people problems!
It really can be like that too. A home can be an alien environment for your new dog, so go easy on them and start by using small steps.
